Coaches taught about concussion

As seen in the Ben Robinson case a coach not knowing how to treat concussion properly can be fatal. Every coach should have to go through a safety session to teach them about concussion and how dangerous it can be. Any player suspected of having concussion should be immediately taken from the field and as soon as possible afterwards assessed medically. In addition to this each coach should take a concussion card with them so they have several different ways to diagnose a concussion.

Example of a concussion card that could be carried by each coach

3 Strikes you're out rule

The 3 strikes you're out rule is a rule which means that if a player receives 3 concussions they have to give up playing. While this may seem extreme it means that players who may already have damaged their brain will not make the long lasting effects of the first three concussions any worse.

Further Improvments to the rules

Further improvments to the rules and equipment need to be made.

  • In Rugby Union improve the scrums further
  • In Rugby League make sure shoulder charges are punished so players get the message not to do them
  • In American Football improve the padding and helmets so players can play the game more safely.
